Sustainability encompasses an awareness of the need to preserve the environmental, social, and economic landscapes for future generations. As the EPA states, “Sustainability is based on a simple principle: Everything that we need for our survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment…Sustainability is important to making sure that we have and will continue to have, the water, materials, and resources to protect human health and our environment.”
Our children are at the center of this perspective. At the Open Center, we acknowledge and prioritize the importance of sustaining our world in a state in which our kids can be healthy, happy, and well.
We do this in a number of ways:
- We encourage and expand recycling efforts; our snack and lunch cups, bowls, and utensils are all recycled as part of daily practice.
- We’ve replaced Styrofoam products with recyclable (and healthier) options.
- We purchase non-toxic paints, carpets, and floor varnishes.
- We are members of the MA Department of Environmental Protection’s Green Team
We’re always looking for new ideas and new ways to make the Center more sustainable. If you’re interested in participating, sharing any thoughts, or want to know more, do not hesitate to contact the center.
